blakemarvin.com and iPhone, together at last

I thought I would share some great news.  Now everyone’s favorite phone loves everyone’s favorite architectural photographer!  My portfolio site blakemarvin.com is now iPhone compatible thanks to my crafty friends over at clickbooq.  So if you feel like checking out my site on the road or out of the office, just break out that iPhone and go nuts.  Also as an added feature, portfolios can now hold up to 72 images.  That’s twice the amount of exotic locations and stunning architecture for your viewing pleasure.  Enjoy

Blog: Rennovation Complete!

I’m proud to announce that I’ve finished revamping the blog.  Thank you all for your patience today in dealing with the stability of the site.  With the exception of a few minor touches here and there the new redesign is done!  Very pleased with the new site thanks to the very talented people over at Graph Paper Press who made it incredibly easy to use and modify their framework.

With the new design I’ll be posting larger photos from shoots, have an ongoing rotation of new images in the homepage slideshow, as well as just being a nicer and cleaner experience.  A quick note, due to the large number of previous posts on the blog, I will not being going back and resizing the hundreds of images to go along with the new dimensions of the site but will be from now on posting larger imagery.

Enough with all the technicalities, take a look around and tell me what you think of the new digs.

Blog: Under Construction…

For quite some time I’ve wanted to step the blog up to the next level.  Part of it has been wanting it to carry over the same look and feel as blakemarvin.com and the other part of it has just been a yearning for something different.

Today I stumbled a across the great people at GraphPaperPress.com and with their carefully crafted themes and customization I think we can really take the blakemarvin.com/blog to a new level.

With all this being said I wanted to warn everyone that there will be a chance you will visit in the next week or so and things will look out of place, even wonkey at best.  During these times the site will be transitioning from one theme to another so please don’t loose faith or just think we’ve lost our minds, I promise it will be worth it.

Until then, enjoy the blog and all of my rambling and findings from the road.  It’s going to be another great year.  We’re already had quite a few shoots this year and it’s just February.  Will post more on them when I’m able to.  Thanks as always for your support.

W Hollywood: First Look

Well we finally left a very snowy Lake Tahoe (read here) for the land of endless rows of palm trees and sunny skies, Los Angeles.  Was in town this week shooting the newly opened W Hollywood situated at the famous cross streets of Hollywood and Vine.  After 10 years of planning and construction, the project kicks off the much needed revitilization of Hollywood and is also one of the first projects that is integrated and developed with the Los Angeles Mass Transit Authority.

Enjoy a few preview shots from the shoot.  I will be heading back in a month or so to do a more comprehensive shoot once a few remaining items get wrapped up.  Until then enjoy.

Hyatt Lake Tahoe: Winter Edition

Back to one of my favorite destinations of 2009, Lake Tahoe.  This time around I’m here to capture the Hyatt Lake Tahoe in all of it’s winter glory.  Unfortunately after a day and a half of brutal snow (great for the skiers, not so much for the photographer) I’m leaving Tahoe without the shots I had hoped and planned for.  As much planning as you can do ahead of time there is just no way to get around wild storm fronts.  So tomorrow I’ll head down to Los Angeles to start shooting the newly completed W Hollywood.  Should be an interesting week of shooting as the hotel prepares of its big opening on Friday.  So while I get back to packing, I’ll leave you with this party shot of the storms in Tahoe.  Enjoy

Happy 100th post blog….PS I love you!

At the beginning of 2009 I had an empty feeling in me.  After 5 years of non stop traveling to capture the stories of the projects and their designs I kept coming back from the shoots feeling like no one was telling my story.  Not the “there once was a boy name Blake who grew up in Dallas and ended up falling in love with a camera, as well as  girl named Blake who he would later marry and live with their 3 incredible rescue dogs (all true stories (and yes my wife’s name is Blake, very confusing I know)).  It was more the stories of the love affairs that are photo shoots and the images they produce.  From the 3am wakeup calls, the delayed flights, a mid air heart attack by a fellow passenger, hobbling around with a tear in both achilles, or the pending hurricanes in tropical destinations, or just the moments of sheer ecstasy when everything and everyone comes together perfectly for an amazing shoot.  These were the stories and pictures that I wanted to tell and share alongside of the beautiful shots of architecture and destinations.  So with that in mind, the blog was born.

Less than 11 months later I find myself writing my 100th blog post which is incredible to think about.  In school I was never much of a writer, the lack of pictures in writing always bothered me (spoken like a true photographer).  So over the course of 100 posts it’s been quite a journey watching the writing evolve.

The blog (as well as the portfolio site blakemarvin.com) has been an amazing outlet for my work as well as my words.  It’s made spending 2/3 of the year on the road a little more fulfilling and has also introduced my work to some truly amazing people whom I would have never met or been able to share it with.  Thank you to all the wonderful people who have left comments and written in to me.  Your enthusiasm for my work always brightens my day and makes the incredible hours and time away from my family a bit more doable.

Speaking of people, we had a lot of you visit the site from all over the world.  I find it incredible that without advertising or seeking out traffic, or really even telling anyone beyond a few friends and family members, that over 6,000 of you would find my site.  The google analytics are astonishing.  There are days when the average time spent on the site approaches 30 minutes per visitor. Your diversity is just as incredible.  In less than 11 months we had people visit from over 94 countries.  My passport itches at the thought of these destinations.

We’ll I guess I should wrap this up as it’s getting a bit long winded and I’ve got packing to do for my shoot tomorrow (check back on the blog later for more details!).  So thanks again to you all for making 2009 an amazing year and here’s to a great 2010 with lots more to come on the blog.  Be sure to pass the blog and portfolio site along to your friends and family as I always love sharing my work with new people.  I’ll leave you all with a parting shot from the road last year down in the Bahamas.  As always, enjoy!

Merry Christmas

Quick post to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.  I thought it would appropriate to do one of my feet/flip-flop shots but halfway through I started to second guess my idea as Dallas got a very unusal “snow storm” on Christmas Eve.  Either way, enjoy and have a great holiday.  Will post an end of year wrap up soon.  Take care and be safe.

Loews Lake Las Vegas: The Gallery

Another day, another gallery to post.  This time from my shoot at the lovely and very not so Vegas like Loews Lake Las Vegas resort (read more from the shoot here 1,2,3,4,5).  Situated about 20 minutes outside of Vegas it’s hard to believe the lights and shenanigans of Vegas are just a quick drive away.  Had some cloudy days and we had some sunny days.  We also had a spectacular post rain sunrise that came out of nowhere that yielded incredibly dramatic clouds.  All in all it was a great shoot so now it’s time to share the gallery, click here for the new images.  Enjoy.

Hyatt Lake Tahoe: The Gallery

Today I add yet another set of finished images to the long list of updates from the last couple of weeks (check out the galleries here).  This one comes from my trip to Lake Tahoe to shoot the Hyatt Lake Tahoe.  It was my first trip to Tahoe and I now can understand all the “Keep Tahoe Blue” stickers I’ve seen throughout my life.  Enjoy the photos and even thought there are only a couple of days left in the year look for a couple more updates.  Enjoy the gallery.

One & Only Ocean Club: The Gallery

Man I feels like Christmas around here with all of the updates.  Today I bring to you the finished images from the One & Only Ocean Club on Paradise Island in the Bahamas.  Situated down the beach from it’s big brother property and mega resort the Atlantis (another HKS project I shot last year).  The Ocean Club is a much smaller and quaint property that focuses on intimate guest experiences instead of giant water slides (which are delightful) that plunge through shark tanks (true story).

Regardless of your preference, the Ocean Club is an amazing resort.  Enjoy the images and look forward to a handful of additional updates before the end of the year.  Click here for the gallery.
